Mumbai CHAPTER
Who Will Bell the Cat? From Strategy to Courageous Execution
June 19, 2026
A timeless Aesop’s fable offers a powerful leadership lesson: having the right strategy is only the beginning. True leadership lies in having the courage to act.

The story of “The Mice and the Cat” tells of a group of mice who devise a brilliant plan: attach a bell to the cat so they can hear her coming. The plan seems perfect—until one mouse asks the question that changes everything: “Who will bell the cat?”
The lesson remains remarkably relevant in organizations today. Leaders often come together to build strategies, align on priorities, reduce costs, or solve complex problems. But while deciding what needs to be done is relatively easy, deciding who will take the risk and make it happen is far harder.
Historically, leadership often meant leading from the front and accepting personal risk. Today, genuine moral courage and the ability to “walk the talk” can sometimes be harder to find. In an organization, the “cat” could represent anything from discrimination and mismanagement to deeply entrenched practices that no one wants to challenge.
So when the alarm bells ring, who has the courage to act?
Whether it means taking difficult decisions, challenging the status quo, fostering innovation, or standing up for what is right, “Who will bell the cat?” is ultimately a question about accountability and execution.
Making a plan is easy. Executing it is everything.
