Vice President and Head of Group Strategic Sourcing at Tata Group

Mr. Indriyajit Sethi

We had the honor of hosting Mr. Indriyajit Sethi, Vice President and Head of Group Strategic Sourcing at Tata Group, for an insightful and engaging workshop on strategic sourcing synergies within Tata Group. With over two decades of experience at Tata, Mr. Sethi has been instrumental in driving cost optimization, digital transformation, and collaborative sourcing strategies that have reshaped the way Tata Group operates across its businesses.

Mr. Sethi’s expertise in shared services, procurement collaboration, and leveraging sourcing synergies was showcased in this unique session, where students presented their frameworks and solutions on how Tata Group can further enhance sourcing synergies across its diverse companies.

Key Takeaways from the Workshop:

Mr. Sethi set the stage for the session by encouraging students to dive deep into various ‘One Tata’ initiatives and explore the synergies that could be created by treating all Tata companies as a unified entity.

He provided the students with a challenging yet exciting task that involved the following:

  1. Exploring Tata’s Structure: Students were asked to choose ten Tata companies from different sectors and examine the synergies that could be created through shared resources and unified strategies.
  2. Research and Data Analysis: The students were asked to perform a balance sheet drill down, identifying major cost heads (commodities and services) and estimating the potential size of the sourcing synergy opportunity.
  3. Strategic Ideation: Students ideated on the aspirations and vision for sourcing synergy, focusing on change management and digital transformation. They also discussed whether the operations should be outsourced or insourced and what the implications would be.

Interactive Discussions and Group Contributions:

What made the workshop truly engaging was Mr. Sethi’s active interaction with the student groups. He not only reviewed their suggestions but also engaged in meaningful discussions, highlighting different aspects of synergy creation across Tata Group:

  • Synergy Across Sourcing: The students highlighted multiple synergies, especially in consolidating sourcing functions across Tata companies to streamline operations and reduce costs.
  • Operational Improvements: Several groups suggested innovative operational improvements, focusing on procurement synergies, cost control, and optimized vendor management across the conglomerate.
  • Centralization of HR Functions: One of the most intriguing discussions came from a group that suggested the centralization of HR functions across Tata Group, which would enable better talent acquisition, standardization, and cost optimization at a group-wide level.

The One Tata Initiative

A key focus of the workshop was the One Tata initiative, where Mr. Sethi provided a real-world example of how Tata Group companies can operate as one unified entity to maximize synergies. This initiative not only optimizes procurement but also paves the way for consolidating various functions and departments across companies. The workshop provided a deep dive into the complexities of merging these entities and the challenges Tata Group must address to make this initiative successful at scale.

Conclusion

The workshop was a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, with Mr. Sethi offering invaluable insights into how sourcing synergies can drive long-term value for Tata Group. The students walked away with a deeper understanding of procurement synergies, digital transformation, and the role of collaboration in business strategy.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Indriyajit Sethi for his time, expertise, and engaging discussions that enriched the session. It was an incredible learning experience for everyone involved, and we look forward to more such interactions in the future!
